Don’t Think is a live concert film shot on location during the Chemical
Brother’s headline set at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival in July 2011.
Directed by Adam Smith, the man behind all the Chemical Brothers’ visual madness, it’s more ‘festival experience’ than live set. A mixture of handheld cameras and industrial film equipment capture everything from the crowd’s facial expressions to the band’s spectacular projections, giving you the chance to feel part of the festival action without the dubious sound quality and that girl on some guy’s shoulders blocking your entire view.
Don't expect a plot or dialogue, but you do get a kind of musical journey from the past 20 years, and some pretty ‘phat’ beats along the way (well how else would you describe them?). The night climaxes with the classic ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ but the surprising standout track was ‘Don’t Think’, originally composed for the nightclub scene in Black Swan (a little bit of film trivia for you there).
The film feels like a form of illicit hedonism. It says screw you to the mundane reality of everything from the credit crunch to cold sores and draws you into a state of pure and reckless euphoria.
The atmosphere was so highly charged that by the time they cracked out ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ the entire cinema was on its feet raving amid shouts of ‘Everybody get naked’, as if they were half way up Mount Fuji and not in the Hackney Picturehouse.
If Itchy had to leave a memento in one of those time capsules Blue Peter presenters used to bury, this would be it.
