Five Ways Not to be a Tourist in York

How to enjoy the delights of York without sticking to the beaten track and looking like a tourist in your own town.

Feature

Every summer tourists from all over the world flock to the beautiful city of York, which recently topped a poll to become the UK's favourite small city. However, whilst the tourist attractions of York should certainly be visited, don't believe that's all it has to offer. Here are the top five ways to not be a tourist in York.

Embrace the ducks
Many tourists appear surprised, even perturbed at the large population of ducks around York, and even more so at the duck traffic signs indicating that a duck may well casually cross the road. We say, embrace the ducks and you embrace York. Just don't physically embrace them – some have quite the beak.

Take Time For Tea
Betty's, Betty's, Betty's. It's all anyone visiting York wants to talk about . While the tea room is renowned for its amazing array of cakes, sometimes the hype just isn't a regular Yorkie's, well, cup of tea. Instead, why not try Bullivant of York, situated on Blake Street. Children may prefer the McDonald's opposite, but with specialities such as Chocolate Heaven, a chocolate chip scone with Yorkshire clotted cream and luxury praline chocolate spread served with a hot chocolate, we're sure they, along with many of the adults, will enjoy their visit.

Discover The Minster Anew
The Minster Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking sights of York, but rather than simply joining the masses, take a medieval shortcut to make it extra special. By walking through the snickelway (what some locals call the secret passageways in York) literally placed in the Hole in the Wall pub on High Petergate, you'll be confronted with a stunning view of the Minster, without a tourist in sight.

Tremble With Madness
After a long day of sight-seeing in York, many pubs offer great ways for tourists to unwind. However, for an extra special atmosphere, why not try the House of Trembling Madness, a cosy gem whose inside recreates a 12th century medieval hall, all above The Bottle beer shop on Stonegate. As is appropriate for medieval times, the vast range of unusual beers, ciders and tasty snacks are fit for a king – with the cheese and bread platter definitely getting a royal thumbs up.

Prepare to be Amazed
The Winner of the 2011 People's Choice Award for the York tourism awards was neither the Jorvik Viking Centre nor the National Railway museum, but York Maze, Europe's largest maize maze, situated outside of York on Elvington Lane. So to escape the often hectic masses that crowd the streets around summer time, why not get lost – in the nicest sense – in the attraction that has something for everyone. there are even facilities for weddings, which must be handy if you want to lose your partner in a hurry.
If you fancy being a tourist for just a night, maybe splash out on one of these hotels in York?
