Itchy York article
York stage scene
The theatres of York.
Grand Opera House
Cumberland Street (01904) 671818
Intimate and appealing Edwardian theatre located in the city centre. The Grand Opera House plays host to all genres of shows - musicals, ballets, orchestras and comedians. In spite of past year's flooding it’s still going, and it’s only a matter of time before Ken Dodd plays here again. Also Bodger and Badger toured here a couple of years ago and I think it was one of the happiest moments in this fair city.
Theatre Royal
St Leonard’s Place (01904) 623568
Built in 1744 on the site of the Old St. Leonards Hospital. It was renamed the Theatre Royal in 1769 when the management paid £500 for a royal patent. Since then a host of notables have performed here, but you’d struggle to beat the talented Professor Cocker’s “Fifteen Educated Horses” – no we didn’t understand it either, but it would probably have been good to watch. It is very popular within the city for its host of acclaimed plays, of which the pinnacle is the legendary panto starring York’s favourite Dame, Berwick Kaler. Playing every year, it’s a must see. Just think how your child’s education could be damaged if they weren’t forced to watch a man in a dress from an early age?
Friargate Theatre
Lower Friargate (01904) 655317
Owned and managed by Riding Lights, one of the UK’s longest-running independent touring theatre companies. Used largely as a rehearsal space for the Christian theatre group, you can catch previews of some productions before they're taken on tour.
