Theatre Royal, York

Built in 1744 on the site of the old St Leonard's hospital, this theatre has struggled through fire, flood, restoration and bankruptcy. Despite a major overhaul, tiny bits of the original architecture are still evident in the vaulted hospice remains in the Theatre Club, and the medieval well below the stage. The theatre has been presenting repertory works since 1922 and still relies on these for the majority of its output. 2002 saw in–house works of Piaf and Loot, whereas touring productions included Sing–A–Long–A–Sound of Music –which was apparently "Fresh, fun and as clean as a nun".
