The Minster, York

Built between the 12th and 15th century, over a period of 250 years, this awe–inspiring example of Gothic architecture sees more than 2 million tourists and pilgrims darkening its doors each year. Like many old things, the past few years have seen the Minster undergoing a series of renovations, and since 1967 over £4 million has been spent. Perhaps most memorable was the campaign following the 1984 fire – thought to have been caused by lightning –, when Blue Peter offered youngsters with volunteer–itis the chance to design the new ceiling bosses. The history associated with the building would have many a historian pointing feverishly at a flipchart for days but the Foundation Museum under the Minster offers an abridged version. And although it's the largest Gothic church in England you needn't worry –you won't be besieged by Cure fans in velvet strides snarling at you through their black lipstick on arrival.
