Jorvik Viking Centre, York

Since archaeologists discovered the remains of a Viking village underneath Coppergate, this tourist attraction seems to have developed a preoccupation with the stench of our yokel ancestors. Even the £5 million refurbishment, which saw the centre reopening 'afresh' in 2001, didn't withdraw the public's opportunity to smell the cooking, fire burning and waste matter of our forefathers. Hop into a 'time capsule' and travel along the cityscape of AD 975 and a 27 year timeline over painstakingly recreated backyards, businesses and bedrooms. The museum contains over 800 original artefacts found at the site, and each year the Jorvik Viking Festival sees bloodthirsty members of the public stabbing each other with replica artefacts.
