Olive Tree, The, York

Cracking family–run Mediterranean restaurant opposite Clifford's Tower, so there's no excuse to miss it. A top spot for large groups it manages to be just as good at the old intimate charm for romantic couples. Open throughout the day and when it's not serving food you can pop in for a hot beverage. All this goes to add a very civilised, cosmopolitan touch that'll make you feel more European than you'd usually expect in York. Whether you're on the tourist trail, enjoying a walk down the river or are just after some fine food with Mediterranean charm, then rest yourself in here.

User Reviews for Olive Tree, The

We were really looking forward to our late Valentine's dinner, which we booked for 8pm on a Sturday night. We knew we were going to be late, so we rang and they told us that they would hold our table. When we got there, we did not have a table and had to wait for another half an hour. A very rushed non-English speaking floor manager put us in a corner with a group of 6 people to wait for our table with no offer of drinks. We had a lovely table, but the service was non-existent. We had to ask for everything and once we did, we waited half an hour for it i.e our wine. The food was excellent but overpriced; the waiters did not know what they were doing and were even shouted at by the floor manager in front of customers. We did not want to pay the 10% tip automatically added to our bill as the only thing we didn't do ourselves was cook the meal. When we confronted a staff member about this, the floor manager was very rude. We then found out that it had been taken over by new management and that before it used to be amazing...not anymore. The food was lovely annd if we were to pay a tip I would hope it went to the chef! Service was terrible. They even asked people to move halfway through their meals so that they could use their tables for two to add to another table...how rude! Never again.

That's mad! Myself &my partner were in the restaurant on the very same evening and we too were moved half way through our meal onto a display table in a squashed corner - they didn't even clear the display table, and we were left to finish our puddings and coffee on a table with buckets of champagne on and about 15 bottles of wine. All that just to accommodate a table of 8; it was like we were no longer important to staff and that our money counted for nothing, like they saw pound signs at the table of 8. We complained at the end of the evening as it totally ruined our night and the guy behind the bar gave us 2.50 back! I also wrote a complaint to the manager. I cannot believe it happened to others in the same night. It's a real shame as it could have been such a nice evening but the service that night was probably the worst I have ever experienced anywhere.

This is the best restaurant we have eaten in since moving to the UK. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. We had dinner there on the 8 July 2007.
